Merchant Adventurers' Business and Enterprise Discovery Lecture
The Merchant Adventurers of the City of York have a proud history of supporting business and enterprise education. When the company was founded and the Hall was built in 1357, Merchant members supported the training of apprentices, many of whom went on to become successful Merchant Adventurers themselves. Today, our 1988 Charitable Trust continues this support for business and enterprise education.
The Merchant Adventurers have been working in partnership with Enterprise Works at the University of York to host Business Breakfasts inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs by providing key speakers and networking opportunities. We also offer free public lectures in partnership with the University of York covering topics in Arts and Science. Bringing both threads together, the next step is the introduction of an annual evening Business Lecture, offering insights for up-and-coming entrepreneurs into different business philosophies. The first in this series is ‘In Conversation with Julian Richer’, Wednesday 6 November, 6.30pm, at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall.
Martin Vander Weyer says: “Julian Richer started selling hi-fi systems as a teenager and built Richer Sounds into a hugely successful retail chain. Along the way he developed a distinctive management philosophy, based on the simple principle that ‘what you get out of people depends on how you treat them’. He went on to place 60 per cent of Richer Sounds’ shares in a trust for the benefit of its staff and to found the Good Business Charter, which champions ‘responsible business behaviour for the benefit of people and planet’, and the Fairness Foundation which champions fairness as well as founding and overseeing several other national not for profits. He’s a brilliant advocate for change for the better.”
He writes his own column in the Sunday Times when he has time and has written several well reviewed books including his latest ‘Our housing disaster….. and how to fix it’.
