This project, led by David Zeitlyn in the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthopology at Oxford, targets the AHRC Care for the Future theme. The ICNS provides the narrative perspective; we are also collaborating with an expert in human-computer interaction, Steve Whittaker (UC Santa Cruz). The idea is to explore the potential for an app-based interactive narrative approach to facilitating the visitor's museum experience and engagement with the archive (museums have tended either to provide prescribed narrative routes through their material, or to foster interactivity in ways that actually undermines any narrative understanding). The project proposes to pursue the idea through an empirical case study, and evaluate both the extent to which it effectively facilitates the efforts of users to make narrative sense of their museum experiences, and the potential for those narratives themselves, and the associated narratives that users bring to the experience, to feed back into and enrich the narrative potential of the museum archive.
