While the concept of a project on the relation between narrative and complex systems had already been broached in Richard Walsh's British Academy Research Development proposal, "Narrative and Emergence," the first project developed in the context of the NarCS network was a proposal in response to the AHRC's call for Science in Culture Exploratory Awards, and was called "Narrative and Complex Systems: Incompatible Paradigms, Cross-Disciplinary Encounter and Public Engagement with Science." This proposal foregrounded two parallel issues: the methodological challenge entailed by the radically interdisciplinary dialogue the NarCS group had initiated; and the science communication challenge highlighted by the clash between narrative and complexity.
