Interdisciplinary projects invited for YCCSA Summer School

Posted on 13 November 2015

Humanities researchers with interests in complexity may want to propose an interdisciplinary project for this year's YCCSA summer school, as an opportunity for collaboration with academics from different disciplines.

The York Centre for Complex Systems Analysis, (YCCSA), has been running a successful interdisciplinary scholarship programme for the last seven years.  I am emailing to invite you to take part in the Summer School by submitting a project proposal.

Scholarships are available to students from the UK, EU and overseas institutions. All students who are committed to a course of study in the following year are eligible. Students undertake a 9 week placement during which time they pursue an interdisciplinary research project with (at least) two academic supervisors from different disciplines. The scheme has attracted a growing number of excellent applications and this year saw a total of 41 with 12 students being successful.

Participating departments have included:

Archaeology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronics, English, Environment, HYMS/Health Sciences, Language and Linguistics, Management, Maths, Music, Physics, Psychology, History of Art, Theatre Film and Television, and we welcome any other departments who would like to be involved.

For staff, the projects have proved to be an invaluable resource for developing cross-disciplinary collaborations and students have the opportunity to gain experience of research that should benefit their career development.

The scholarships carry a tax-free stipend and financial assistance will be given for travel expenses to and from York. Accommodation for successful students is available on the University of York Campus.

This year we expect we will be able to fund a similar number of students.  With this in mind, we would like to invite colleagues to submit project proposals suitable for two to three students to jointly work on as well as the traditional single student project.  We would expect for the joint projects not only the supervisors to come from different disciplines but also the project students.

If you would like to offer an interdisciplinary research project with a colleague from another department, you can find details on how the scheme operates at: http://www.york.ac.uk/yccsa/activities/summerschool/   There is a link to the project submission form from here which gives some useful instructions.  We will in the New Year hold an information session for all supervisors outlining the supervisors’ role and expectations from the students.
