Friday 25 January 2013, 1.30PM to 18:00
Speaker(s): Professor Linda Dalrymple Henderson (University of Texas) and Professor Patricia Leighten (Duke University) and others
While the notion of the modernist ‘movement’ has long been debunked, there has been renewed scholarly attention in the humanities in recent years to strategies of collectivism and expressions of shared experience in the cultural sphere. Professors Henderson and Leighten will be joined by Dr James Boaden, Kirstin Donaldson, Rachel Smith and Dr Sarah Turner from the History of Art Department and together address topics such as group formation in connection to esoteric and secret knowledge, the construction of group identities through publications and ‘little magazines,’ and the relationship between individualism and collectivism. A final panel discussion involving Professor Mark Antliff (Duke University) will complete the event.
