Friday 6 May 2011, 6.00PM to 8.00pm
Speaker(s): James Currey
James Currey has published some of the most influential African writers - from Chinua Achebe to Tayeb Salih, from Bessie Head to Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o. He worked in Cape Town for Oxford University Press in the 1960s but is most well known for his many years managing the African Writers Series at Heinemann. These exciting decades (1967-1984) are vividly described in his recent memoir: Africa Writes Back, published by his own academic imprint - James Currey Ltd. Still actively involved in publishing academic and creative writing, James Currey is coming to York to discuss his experiences with writers from Southern Africa including Bessie Head, Dennis Brutus and Dambudzo Marechera.
