Wednesday 9 March 2011, 6.30PM
Speaker(s): Professor Ed Cohen, Rutgers University
When we think of "being human" we often mean "belonging to the human species." Indeed, this idiom probably seems self-evident to most of us who inhabit this particular zone of existence, that is, the part that we call the “human species.” This talk will consider, first, how this way of dividing up and sharing the life world came to make sense and then, second, what the kind of sense that it makes—and makes of us—when we sense and make sense of ourselves in its name.
Professor Cohen teaches cultural studies and directs the doctoral program in women’s and gender studies at Rutgers University.
The lecture will be preceded by a postgraduate workshop led by Ed Cohen at 2.45pm in the Treehouse, Berrick Saul Building. Further details
