Defending Human Rights: Global and Local Perspectives

Friday 12 November 2010, 5.45PM to 7.15pm

Speaker(s): Sigrid Rausing

Sigrid Rausing, writer, publisher, and founder of the Sigrid Rausing Trust set up to support international human rights will be the keynote speaker, addressing human rights defence in a global context. She will speak alongside one of CAHR's visiting human rights fellows from Kenya. These presentations will be followed by a panel discussion on York as a 'human rights city', emphasising that the defence of human rights also has a local component.

The panel includes:

  • Stephen Pittam, Trust Secretary, Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust
  • Haleh Afshar, Department of Politics / House of Lords
  • Inderjit Singh Bhogal, Yorkshire and Humber Interfaith forum (tbc)

The event is hosted by the Centre for Applied Human Rights (CAHR), University of York, and International Service (IS), a York-based development agency. As part of the work of both CAHR and IS to promote the work of human rights defenders to a wider local and national audience, and to launch a partnership between the two agencies, we will be hosting this exciting event.
