Affiliations: Sites of Inscription is a show of 'debate specific work' which hopes to contribute to existing discourse and research on meaning in space and the psychology of place, expanding this field of research with a debate and associated series of lectures.
Exploring relationships between people and place with landscape and community, the show is a collaborative project between artists Jim Brogden and Paul Wilson, both lecturers at Leeds University.
Paul's photographic work is a glimpse into the clandestine world of the working men's clubs through which he examines how class, gender, traditions and social dogma is inscribed into the very layout and aesthetic of each club.
Whilst Jim uses digital photography as well as writing to investigate the more marginal zones within the urban landscape, often referred to as 'non-spaces'. In his own words, his are images of absence in which 'the marginal space is inscribed by the marginal'. The exhibition includes both photographic work and sound installation.
To coincide with the show, a special lecture will be held at the Bowland Auditorium, Berrick Saul Building on Wednesday 24th November from 4.45-5.45pm, providing visitors with a chance to meet directly with artist Paul and to hear more about the research behind his visual work. Guest speaker: Prof Helen Hills, director of the Research School for Architectural History and Theory at York.
