Complex and simple musical styles might seem to sit at odds with one another. However, if they are to engage their audiences – rather than just under- or overwhelm – these apparently polarised approaches must embrace one another. Considering strikingly different pieces by Stravinsky (Movements) and John Adams (Shaker Loops), we hope to show through this joint presentation how both composers achieve surprisingly relevant ends: musical narratives that prove compelling for their listeners.
