The prize, which will be presented in November at the Academy’s annual dinner at Uppsala Castle, is in recognition of ‘hans förtjänstfulla arbeten om nordiska ortnamn i Cumbria och Yorkshire [his meritorious work on Scandinavian place-names in Cumbria and Yorkshire]’.

For over twenty years, Matt’s research has explored the language, history, and heritage of Viking Age England, and he has studied the north of England in particular in his books The Vikings and Victorian Lakeland: the Norse medievalism of W.G. Collingwood and his contemporaries (2009) and Viking Age Yorkshire (2014).
