Speaker(s): Professor Daniel Wakelin (University of Oxford)
Daniel Wakelin (Oxford) will deliver the Annual Riddy Lecture.
Since some famous manuscript conferences at York in the 1980s, studying manuscripts has been a crucial part of studying medieval English literature – an approach later known as the study of ‘material texts’. But at the limits of pages, in page breaks and margins, it is possible to see some limits to studying ‘material texts’. The method is challenged by elements of the material page which are difficult to relate to the text, or which disrupt copying and reading.
