Danelaw Stories: The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and the Conquest

This talk focuses on two translations of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle produced in the early twelfth century: the Annals of St Neots and Geoffrey Gaimar's History of the English. These texts were both composed in the Danelaw, an area in northern and eastern England settled by the Vikings during the ninth century. Dr Younge will argue that these versions of the Chronicle contain a blend of Saxon, Viking, and Norman influences, and link this to the development of a sense of regional identity in the Danelaw after the Norman Conquest.
