Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics in memoriam Paul Busch, 18th - 19th June 2019

  • Date and time: Tuesday 18 June 2019, 10.00am
  • Location: K/133 Kings Manor, York, UK (This building is a short walk from York’s railway station, not on the university’s campus.)

Event details

The aim of the meeting is to bring together researchers whose work relates to the interests of Paul Busch who, while holding a Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowship (2017-18), passed away last year after a short illness.

Paul Busch, an elected Fellow of the Institute of Physics and of the Académie Internationale de Philosophie des Sciences, had been a professor of Mathematics at the University of York since 2005. He also served as president of  the International Quantum Structures Association until last year and was a pupil of Peter Mittelstaedt, one of its founding members.

Paul made many fundamental contributions to the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics, in particular to the theory of measurement and uncertainty relations. A characteristic feature of his approach was to clarify conceptual issues besetting the foundations of quantum theory, by providing mathematically rigorous answers.

The meeting will run over two full days, with sessions dedicated to the topics which were central to Paul’s work.
