Profile

Biography

Chris is a business historian, and has previously taught History and English at Sheffield Hallam University. He also has a background in learning and teaching developments, having worked on projects related to employability, learner autonomy, critical thinking and group work since 2008. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  Chris completed his PhD in 2016, and won the 2017 Coleman Prize from the Association of Business Historians for excellence in new business history research.

Chris is also the recipient of an Emerald Literati Award in 2019 for their work in the Journal of Management History, and a Vice Chancellor's Teaching Award in 2020. He is currently a trustee of the Economic and Business History Society, and an editorial board member of the Journal of Management History. Outside of academia Chris is an advisor to Sheffield Archives, member of the Joined Up Heritage Sheffield Strategy Board, and Chair of Portland Works Little Sheffield.

Research

Overview

Chris' research interests are related to the armaments industry in Britain from the 1890s to the 1930s, and the Sheffield metalworking industries from the 13th to the 20th centuries. He is also working on projects related to the development and understanding of industrial clusters with colleagues at Northumbria and Reading Universities. Chris is also undertaking research on the banking and mining sectors and director networks from 1930 to 1980 with colleagues in the School for Business and Society.

He is a member of the Economic History Society, Association of Business Historians and Management History Research Group.

Chris teaches the undergraduate module Strategic Management.
