Our current programmes

The MSc in Sustainable Business, Environment and Society (dual degree) is a collaboration between the Maastricht Sustainability Institute (part of the Triple Crown accredited School of Business and Economics, Maastricht University) and the Department of Environment and Geography, the University of York's world-leading centre for teaching and research on sustainable solutions to global environmental issues.

The programme incorporates teaching from both universities to develop students’ competencies in sustainable development, business innovation, international collaboration, stakeholder participation and communication. Student spend the first semester at Maastricht University, the second semester at York, and the summer completing a dissertation. Those who complete the course successfully will receive a degree from the University of York and Maastricht University.

Future education and training opportunities

The collaboration will continue to explore options for collaborative education and training, following a set of core principles to ensure that all YMP education and training activities include:

  • Truly collaborative learning - joint programmes and activities will be designed to enable collaboration across national, cultural and educational boundaries.
  • Interdisciplinary approaches - rather than simply duplicating existing programmes and activities which exist in York or Maastricht, the partnership will add value by developing training that runs across the traditional disciplinary boundaries. These initiatives will bring together cross-department and faculty expertise from both York and Maastricht.
  • High quality and distinctive activities to attract the best students and staff we can, while ensuring that we also fully support access from diverse cohorts (including those whose economic background might put them off applying for a multi-centre programme or training).
  • Research-led, problem-based learning (PBL) - taught activities will bring together York and Maastricht expertise, marrying up the PBL expertise in Maastricht (and the current PBL centres of excellence in York) with York’s strong experience in research-led education.
  • Technology-enabled learning - recognising the hugely important role technology can play in enabling collaboration throughout a programme.
  • A focus on building a sustainable future - collaborative training will equip graduates and staff with skills needed to tackle the big challenges facing society both today and in the future.
