There is presently much focus publicly, politically, and professionally, on mental health. Rates of professionally diagnosed mental disorders and self-diagnosed mental ill-health have increased massively over recent years. However, there is much debate about what is ‘mental health’ and therefore ‘mental ill-health’. Moreover, there is debate over whether there is a genuine surge in psychological suffering or whether there is an undue amplification of everyday difficulties described as ‘mental-healthism’. These issues will be discussed in this session.
