Jean-Paul Sartre asked challenging questions about the nature of being and living authentically, and gave challenging answers. His philosophical magnum opus, Being and Nothingness, details an existentialist outlook in which thoughts about the self intertwine with insights on morality and meaning. In a time of fascist oppression in occupied France, Sartre held a doctrine of radical freedom, claiming that consciousness had no essence except that which we project onto it. This course explores Sartre’s radical and challenging philosophy.
