This course will look at the tendency in late twentieth-century French philosophy which elaborated the themes of difference, heterogeneity, and otherness (alterity). The philosophers to be studied include Foucault, Levinas, Deleuze, Derrida, Lyotard, Baudrillard, and Irigaray. Their impact on Anglo-American thinkers, such as Judith Butler, will also be considered, as will their relationship to the broader cultural movement known as ‘postmodernism’.
