In this course, we will think about the relationship between writing, travel, and place. Our reading will accompany writers as they traverse the places which have shaped their sense of who they are as creatives. By discussing works including Tove Jansson’s The Summer Book, Rebecca Solnit’s A Field Guide to Getting Lost, Orhan Pamuk’s Istanbul, and Donna Leon’s My Venice and Other Essays, we will explore what it means to be a writer in Europe, Asia and the United States.
