Saturday 23 November 2024, 10.00AM to 1:15pm
Speaker(s): Maddy Potter PhD
Ruined abbeys, haunted castles, landscapes shrouded in fog: these recognisable tropes of the Gothic have thrilled and terrified readers. But how did it all start? Through historical contextualisation and close-readings of excerpts from novels and poetry, this course explores the emergence and development of Gothic fiction in Britain and Ireland. Although the Gothic is linked to the world of fantasy, this course will flesh out the real concerns it articulates, as well as the historical background which makes it possible.
