The artist Nikolay Astrup (1880–1928) is little known outside of his native Norway, but is embraced as a national treasure at home. In the words of his contemporaries, his art ‘was everything together and all at once, naturalism, romanticism and symbolism – and naïve art included’. A keen horticulturalist and conservationist, as well as artist, Astrup sought to capture his vivid environment, employing colour as a chief pictorial means and guided by an abiding love of Norway’s ancient lore.
