The period 1400-1460 saw the emergence of the first generation of the great Netherlandish painters: Robert Campin (the Master of the Flémalle), Jan van Eyck, and Rogier van der Weyden. In this course, we place their major works back into their original contexts of making, patronage, purpose and meaning, as we seek to analyse their achievements in detail and deepen our understanding of their art.
