The Mediterranean Sea served as a means for artistic, cultural and religious exchange between East and West during the medieval period through trade, war and pilgrimage. This course examines the multicultural art and architecture produced in this region from the fourth to the fifteenth centuries. Topics explored include cross-cultural art and architecture in Spain, Byzantine and Islamic influences in Sicily and Venice, French and Northern European contacts with the Middle East, Gothic and Venetian architecture in Cyprus, and representations of race across the Mediterranean world.
