During the course we will examine the changing roles that women have played in the making and the consumption of art from the early modern period until today. The focus will be on the ways in which artists forged their identities within the paradigms of the time and how patronage impacted on their ability to do so. The role of women as subjects within paintings and the nature of ‘woman as model’ will also be explored. Finally the intersections of race and gender will take an airing in the late twentieth century.
