Inspired by Herrington’s recent book Victorian Artists and their World: as reflected in the papers of Joanna and George Boyce and Henry Wells, this course brings their experiences to life through their words and detailed exploration of their art. We follow them, and well-known Pre-Raphaelite, Aesthetic and Academic artists of the period, learning about their travels, training, paint mediums and processes, involvement with the art market and patrons. All the while, Joanna Boyce’s career illuminates women artists’ remarkable progress.
