In this course we shall investigate the role of landscape in Edvard Munch’s oeuvre, paying particular attention to the artist’s relationship with the sea and the native shore, which, in contrast with the perceived image of a purveyor of angst, reveals Munch as a champion of peace, harmony, and solace in nature, whose work forged a new harmony of the past and the future, both for himself, and the country - between expressionist and Renaissance artistic vocabularies.
