In 1920 the first of 10,000 'Black and Tans' were sent to Ireland, veterans of the Great War recruited to defeat the growing threat from the separatist IRA and reassert British authority. However they quickly became notorious, hated by the majority of the Irish population, and reviled even by the British Army and Press. But were the Tans really the monsters of nationalist propaganda? How close did they come to fulfilling their purpose? What was their legacy to Anglo-Irish relations?
