From the Middle Ages China was subjected to numerous forms of 'informal empire' by other nations interested in forcing trade. Usually maintaining its sovereignty but compelled to allow an ever-increasing number of imperial powers to establish colonies within its borders, eventually over a dozen national flags flew over China's largest cities. This course studies China's appeal to other nations, its decline from regional superpower to defeated vassal, its 'century of humiliation' and the final victory against foreign domination.
