In the Languedoc region of France, a group of Dualists settled and became organised. They grew and by the thirteenth century, they had developed a hierarchy of bishops, priests, and acolytes. They were the Cathars, who challenged the authority of the Catholic establishment. The Church responded by launching a Crusade against them. This course will study the origins, growth and practices of the Cathars in the Languedoc, and the wars fought against them which resulted in their obliteration.
