The Middle Ages on the Silver Screen

Wednesday 29 January 2025, 2.00PM to 4.00pm

Speaker(s): Cristina Figueredo BA MA PhD

Seats in a cinema theatre

Since the end of the Middle Ages, the period has been recreated in art and literature. However, the cinema has defined medieval life more vividly; its images have influenced modern audiences more than any other medium. In 1928, the silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc was deemed so dangerous that it was banned in Britain. How historically accurate have these films been? This course will watch and study films about medieval heroes (historical and fictional), medieval whodunnits, epic battles, and disastrous romances.
