The Legend of St Helena

Saturday 15 March 2025, 10.00AM to 1.00pm

Speaker(s): Gillian Waters BA MA PGDip PGCE

Sculpture of St. Helena, St Peter's Basilica

On 25 July 306 AD Constantine the Great was proclaimed Roman Emperor in York. Memories of this event became entangled with the belief that Constantine was born in York, (at the Bedern), and that Constantine’s mother, Helena, was a British princess. This day school examines the historical life of Helena, (who reputedly discovered the True Cross on which Jesus died), the development of the British legends of St. Helena, and why so many churches were dedicated to St. Helena.
