Saturday 22 February 2025, 10.00AM to 4.30pm

Speaker(s): Cristina Figueredo BA MA PhD

Illustration of bookshelves and a swirling image of the cosmos

The Venerable Bede has been celebrated as the first English historian; however, his scientific interests and achievements can be traced in much of his writing. On the Reckoning of Time is the earliest comprehensive treatment of measuring time and constructing a Christian calendar. The book includes an explanation of how the Earth was a sphere. On the Nature of Things is a survey of cosmology; Bede reads the cosmos from the heavens, through the atmosphere, to the oceans and rivers of earth. This course will study Bede’s scientific work within its historical context.
