The Twelfth-Century Renaissance

Thursday 3 October 2024, 2.00PM to 4.00pm

Speaker(s): Cristina Figueredo BA MA PhD

Monreale Cathedral, Sicily

Centuries before the Renaissance proper, the twelfth century witnessed an explosion of intellectual activity which produced some of the most original thinkers, writers, and artists of the Middle Ages. Romanesque art and architecture as well as manuscript illumination reached new heights. Philosophical debates and scholastic development would culminate in the creation of universities. Moreover, vernacular literatures were established, and courtly love developed alongside chivalry. This course will study the major artistic, literary, and philosophical achievements of this remarkable century.
