The Ratline: Nazi Fugitives

Thursday 3 October 2024, 7.00PM to 9.00pm

Speaker(s): Matthew Barr BA MA PhD

An open book with a magnifying glass

This course looks at three notorious postwar fugitives who played important roles in the Holocaust: Gestapochief Klaus Barbie, Otto von Wachter (governor of Krakow) and Adolf Eichmann, a key organiser of the deportations who did not face justice until 1961 following his dramatic seizure and deportation from Argentina. How were these conspicuous war criminals able not only to escape, but to remain free for so long after 1945? Who organised and facilitated their escape along the so-called ‘Ratline’?
