The Holy Roman Empire was one of the most important institutions in Western Europe throughout the Middle Ages; its dynasties shaped medieval Europe politically and culturally. This course will study the history of the Holy Roman Empire from 800 to 1556. By exploring contemporary documents, art, and architecture, it will follow its socio-economic, cultural, and political developments, from conflicts with the Church to the rise of Italian city states, and from the emergence of multi-cultural courts to the advent of capitalism.
