'The Abysmal Woe': The Black Death (1347-1351)

The pandemic of plague known as the 'Black Death' spread from Central Asia through the Mediterranean lands and Western Europe in the mid-fourteenth century. It killed up to 50% of the population of Europe and has been described as the greatest natural disaster in European history. Using a wide range of contemporary written and visual material, and bearing our own pandemic experiences in mind, this course will examine the nature of the plague and the reactions of contemporaries to it.
