Thomas Becket and William FitzHerbert were both twelfth-century ambitious and capable men. Both related to the administration of the kingdom. Both were elevated to the position of Archbishops. One was martyred at Canterbury Cathedral, the other died in suspicious circumstances after officiating mass at York. Both were canonised. Miracles were recorded at both their shrines. This course will study the lives of Thomas of Canterbury and William of York comparatively, using medieval documents and art in the discussion.
