Speaker(s): Cristina Figueredo BA MA PhD
From the beginning of the Roman Empire in the West to the decline of Byzantium in the East some 1,500 years later, the identity of the Empire experienced continuous transformation. Rome and Byzantium can be studied as two stages in the history of the same empire, or as two versions of Rome, each with its own philosophy, ideology, language, and art. This course will explore what everyday life was like in the two imperial capitals of the Roman Empire, focusing on how western and eastern Romans lived, played, learned, traded and worshipped.
