Thursday 3 October 2024, 7.00PM to 9.00pm
Speaker(s): Cristina Figueredo BA MA PhD
Influenced by great buildings of Byzantium and the Muslim East, the Normans revolutionised Northern European ecclesiastical architecture in the eleventh-twelfth centuries. On the Continent, their style is known as Romanesque, in Britain, it is called Norman, and in southern Italy and Sicily, Byzantine-Arab-Norman. This course will study paradigmatic monasteries built by the Normans in Normandy, England, and Italy. It will focus on the abbeys’ architecture and art, set against the backdrop of Norman political domination.
