Writing the City: Place Writing in York

Wednesday 29 January 2025, 7.00PM to 9.00pm

Speaker(s): Rebecca Drake BA MA PhD

St Mary's Abbey ruins, York

This is a course for anyone interested in writing about place, whether in poetry or prose or a mixture of the two. Throughout the semester, we will read a variety of New Nature Writing, or poetry and prose written about places in the UK. You will explore how these writers write about place as inspiration for your own place writing. Each week you will be encouraged to head out into the city of York (whether in person or online through digital platforms such as photos, videos, and sound recordings) to gather inspiration from this place to bring back to the classroom, where we will workshop ideas and build a writing community. By the end of this course, you will have written a creative piece that is ready to be submitted to a literary magazine or local paper.
