Folksongs of Here and Now

Saturday 16 November 2024, 10.00AM to 1.00pm

Speaker(s): Penny Boxall MA

An open notebook with the word 'Poetry' written on one page

Folksongs can have enormous power: the best mix specificity of landscape with universality of emotion. But in order to have resonance, they must ring true. This poetry workshop will invite ways to write modern-day folk-like poems: ones which acknowledge and enfold the contemporary, rather than smoothing experience into flat nostalgia. Folksongs for our times need motorways as much as moss. We’ll read poems by contemporary poets like Clare Shaw and discuss how to look both forward and back in time.
