Saturday 16 March 2024, 10.00AM to 4.30pm
Speaker(s): Simon Skempton PhD
Is time a subjective illusion? Is it absolute or relative? Is it inherently irreversible? It is certainly a slippery concept. This course will explore historical and contemporary debates about the nature of time. Looking at the ideas and theories of philosophers such as Aristotle, Kant, Bergson, McTaggart, and Heidegger, the concept of time will be addressed in both metaphysical (how it is in itself) and phenomenological (how it is experienced) terms. How physicists, such as Newton and Einstein, have conceptualised time will also be looked at.
