Saturday 18 November 2023, 2.00PM to 5.00pm
Speaker(s): Elena Kashina MPhil Mphil PhD
This course will discuss Durham Cathedral through the lens of its being a repository of the history of the British Isles, from the arrival of Christianity there to the present day. We shall do so by looking at the artefacts and documents contained in the Cathedral, by considering their provenance, examining the saints commemorated in the Cathedral and the site’s connections with Scotland, Rome and mainland Europe in the Middle Ages. The wondrous aesthetic will also be discussed and illustrated.
