The composer’s youthful string sinfonias offer a foretaste of the orchestral glories to come. The concert overtures and incidental music, some of it less well-known, reveal Mendelssohn’s flair for orchestration and there is an intriguing blend of classical design and romantic élan in the five symphonies, as also in the sparkling piano concertos and the towering violin concerto. The influence of Bach and Handel is keenly felt in the oratorios, especially St Paul and Elijah. The course will subject Mendelssohn’s multi-faceted talents to keen scrutiny.
