Kenneth Keele collection

The collection consists of approximately 90 books about Leonardo da Vinci; with an emphasis on his scientific and anatomical studies.

How to access the collection

Most of the items in the collection can be borrowed and are located in the Morrell building. A small quantity of books are in the Rare Books Collection and may be consulted at the Borthwick Institute for Archives.

About the collection

The collector

Dr Kenneth David Keele (1909-1987) was a physician, a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and an author of many medical books.

A lifelong interest in medical history resulted in the study of the anatomical works of Leonardo da Vinci.

Keele published books on the subject, copies of which are in the collection. He also contributed many articles and essays to journals and collected works, including studies on Leonardo and the central nervous system, the physiology of the senses, and anatomical illustration.

In 1986, Keele founded the Leonardo da Vinci Society and became its first president shortly before his death.

Acquisition

The collection was deposited by the Leonardo da Vinci Society in 2007.
