Key library dates for the Christmas vacation

Here’s an overview of what happens in the library over December and January, and how it affects you. The information below is in chronological order.

Postal request deadlines 

If you’re an international student requesting we send books out to you, please get these in as soon as you can. We can’t guarantee they’ll reach you by Christmas but if you can get your requests in this week (w/c 27 November) we’ll do our best. 

For postal loans within the UK, please get your requests in no later than 11 December. 

Books can still be recalled over the vacation, so return them or take them with you 

If you’re leaving the University on 15 December, please return your books before you go away. Books can still be recalled by other users, so if you don’t return them you’ll need to take them with you and be ready to post them back to us if you get an email requesting their return. Please don’t leave them in your York residence while you go home! 

Key dates for the Campus East book-lockers, King’s Manor Library and the Minster Library 

  • Midday on Monday 18 December is the deadline for final requests to go to our Booklocker at Campus East. Any uncollected books will be emptied on Friday 22 December and there will be no further requests until January 8th. Update 2024: we're thrilled about the popularity of this service. To ensure things run smoothly into 2024, we need to make a few tweaks to how this service operates. We are aiming to get the Booklocker back up and running from week commencing 15th January - keep an eye on social media for updates!
  • Midday 18 December is also the deadline for final book requests to and from the Minster Library which will be ready from Tuesday 19 December
  • Wednesday 20 December is the deadline for the last requests for books to be delivered from the Morrell to King’s Manor Library - books not fetched by lunchtime on 22 December will be sent back to Morrell
  • Thursday 21 December: the Minster Library closes until 8 January 
  • Friday 22 December: at 5pm King’s Manor Library closes until 2 January

Morrell, Fairhurst and Burton opening hours over Christmas 

  • The main library on Campus West will close at 4pm on 24 December
  • It will open 8am - midnight from 27 December to 30 December inclusive 
  • It will close at 4pm on 31 December, and remain closed on New Year’s Day 
  • The library returns to 8am - midnight opening from 2 January 

24/7 opening returns for the assessment period 

To support exam preparation and revision, we will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from 8am on Monday 8 January until we close at midnight on 4 February.
