Transforming access to Bristol University Press journals with a new read and publish agreement
We're delighted to announce a new 'read and publish' deal with Bristol University Press (BUP), a leading social science publisher.
The deal provides University of York members free access to BUP's full portfolio of online journals and enables York-affiliated authors to publish open access in most BUP journals without incurring an article publication charge.
What is a read and publish deal?
A 'read and publish' deal, also known as a transformative agreement, is an open access publishing agreement. Such deals are usually negotiated at a national level, with individual universities then deciding in which publisher deals they will take part. They move away from a model of paying for access to content behind a paywall to a combined and cost-effective solution to making that content open access for all.
All members of the institution have 'read' access to all the publisher's content included in the agreement, with authors also able to benefit from free or discounted open access publication.
What is included in the Bristol University Press agreement?
The 'read' element of the Bristol University Press (BUP) agreement includes access to their full journal collection, which in the 2023 deal covers the following titles:
- Consumption and Society
- Critical and Radical Social Work
- Emotions and Society
- European Journal of Politics and Gender
- Evidence and Policy
- Families Relationships and Societies
- Global Discourse
- Global Political Economy
- International Journal of Care and Caring
- Journal of Gender-Based Violence
- Journal of Poverty and Social Justice (2002-present)
- Journal of Psychosocial Studies
- Journal of Public Finance and Public Choice (2018-present)
- Justice, Power and Resistance
- Longitudinal and Life Course Studies
- Policy and Politics (2000-present)
- Voluntary Sector Review
- Work in the Global Economy
All of these titles (and articles within them) can be found in YorSearch, the Library's search engine, as well as other discovery services (such as Google Scholar). While the Library already had individaul subscriptions to some of these titles, the deal adds numerous new titles, many of which have been previously requested as subscriptions or via interlending requests.
The 'publish' part of the deal allows unlimited open access publishing for York-affiliated authors in any of the journals listed above. The corresponding author must be a current member of the University of York in order to access the deal. Articles by York authors already accepted in BUP's journals in 2023 will retrospectively be made open access as part of the agreement.
If you have any questions or need further information about the BUP deal or open access publishing in general, please contact the Library's Open Research Team.
