Date: February 2017 - February 2022
Researcher: Professor Matt Matravers
Professor Matravers is a ‘Core Member’ of Workstream 1 of a large Wellcome funded project on Mental Health and Justice.
Together with Jillian Craigie (King’s College, London), Matt is leading on Phase 1 of the project. This phase involves investigating the moral and legal foundations of the decision-making support required by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), with the aim to develop recommendations on its boundaries and practice.
It will also explore the meaning of undue influence when decisions are supported; the theories of agency that underpin models of support; the relationship between identity, mental abilities and support in the context of lifelong mental disability.
This project will engage with other work streams on the legal meaning of support and controversy around the notion of personhood, and involves a Postdoctoral researcher, Paul Skowron, working with Matt at York.
