After graduating with a Scots law LLB from The University of Glasgow (1994), I converted to English law by completing the CPE (1995) and the Legal Practice Course (1996) at Staffordshire University. Following this, I completed the degree of LLM Commercial Law at The University of Birmingham (1997).
I then undertook a training contract in Birmingham, qualifying as a Solicitor in 1999.
My practice experience was mainly in civil litigation and dispute resolution, with firms based in The Midlands and the Channel Islands. I also worked briefly in Poland. I am no longer practising as a Solicitor.
During my time in Jersey (2002-2009), I completed the Jersey Advocates & Solicitors' examination (2009) and was called to the Jersey Bar (2010). Subsequently, in Guernsey (2011-2016), I completed the Bar Examination (2012) alongside a period of study at Caen University, France. I was called to the Guernsey Bar (2013) and practised as a Guernsey Advocate for approximately 3 years. I am no longer an Advocate in either Island.
Before joining York Law School in 2021, I taught on the Bar Practice Course at ULaw Birmingham. At York, my core focus is on facilitating learning, overseeing PBL and legal skills sessions on the LLB programme. I am also involved in assessment and feedback.
In 2023 I completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) at York.
I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the Association of Law Teachers.
I also hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Management (PGCM) awarded by the University of Northampton (2012).
